Letter 1, Page 1. After making payment yesterday its official we now run the Ruskin Studio, although were not properly allowed in until August the 10th. To mark the take over we moved in some quality 70's teak furniture and a world map - a item that always unnerves, making me feel both under travelled and overwhelmed.
However taking the studio on does mean that we can offer space to people [Ruskinites] who need a bit of time and space to make work and explore ideas. I like this part of the project, it would please Ruskin i reckon and I like how it spreads the ACE money about a bit wider. The timetable for the week for the studio begins to fill and to date Paul Allender will be in there on Fridays [starting aug 10th], Ian Wragg and hopefully Steve Anwar will take Thursdays and Steve and Me get Mondays which gives us time to consider the collection that slowly builds [Andy Parkers first of three commissioned letters arrived this week - photo above], ponder the work and project, rub a few minerals and have some time to work out what we're doing - we might also make something. The other days will get filled we hope and will also enable existing Ruskinites to get extra days if they need it. [We also aim in future to offer it for longer periods to other artists for extended residencies to make in relation to the new collection and Ruskin]. As part of the artists using the studio we are partnering with Yorkshire Artspace to run a 'talking shop' or crit group for them and the early career artists on YAS starter studio program. The first will be at the end of August, im looking forward to a bit of banter...
The program for the Poly looks like its coming together and along with the advertisement of a drawing class on Parson Cross, we are in the midst of trying to set a date for the first poly visit/talk - hopefully to the Ruskin Gallery at Millennium galleries with a talk by the curator Lousie Pullen.
