I like your fake ham, like i like this fake hot cross bun [yes its the one on the left!], bought for me for Easter - brilliant, funny, skillful. Their makers have attempted to copy the original but yours did it better than mine - it's in a museum after all!
These things made me think about the work we did at Artemis about which thing was more dead...the road kill rabbit or the stuffed in a perspex box rabbit....i'm not sure we ever decided but i'm going with the road kill. I suppose its a question of which is more fake or perhaps which is more real.
I wonder how this relates back to thinking about landscape, im thinking of what people say - thats a really good depiction of that view, or should that be thats a good depiction of that real view... i'm not sure, but i suppose real and authentic go together and then if we use those words its seems we need to think with words like integrity / honesty.
Honesty is a word/concept i consider and use alot when i think about making work, whether that's the drawing things or our work together. Its interesting because its used a lot to talk of drawing, as is erasure/rubbing out and thats what you spoke of in the last but one post - Marks mark and art as a series of collapses. Ingold describes the landscape as a series of collapsed acts, where by the land is not clean when we come to it, but instead dense with previous actions, be they geological, meterological, human, temporal etc.... When i was told at the RCA that for me to make landscape i was truely authentic or the works were truely authentic [i cant remember which - i think meant they meant i had the monopoply on real because of the farm] - i laughed. I have an insight that offers a different lens but it is no more real or any less fake.
I like a fake as much as the next man, it makes me ponder the idea of authentically fake rather than fake fake. The bun i think falls into the later, its not trying to fool anyone otherwise. But the Ham is being authentically fake - trying to be real, its like the man who faked famous paintings and sold them off as - authentic fakes - reals. But then went to prison and now is famous for faking and makes TV programs about painting in the style of famous paintings - fake fakes... Although now Im not sure if a fake fake makes a real, like in maths when you add 2 negatives you get a positive!
This seems like a funny blog that doesnt really say anything, when i wanted instead to talk about being honest. Perhaps thats it - im trying to be honest and the work i make wants to be that too.
