A trip to Edinburgh for a visit to see Anthony Schrag as part of a the A-N travel bursary we got ages ago entertained us last friday - here's a photo looking across to the National Galleries of Scotland built we were told on an ancient rubbish dump!
We enjoyed spending time with Anthony who seems just as grumpy and ranty about things as us...and all our talk ultimately led us to a conversation about the validation work with Axisweb....which features as part of the heart of Glass event tomorrow. Anthony, who although had not been part of the report, has been invited to speak as part of his walk to Venice for Deveron Arts.
It made me think perhaps we should share the transcribed conversation about artists validating their own work or rather being validated by the context in which they work or by the people they work with, rather than worrying or insisting on being validated by an a arts org or the artworld. The whole conversation with us, Mark Smith, Amanda Ravetz and David Gilbert is long so perhaps the 1% version of it was a better option for here - plus its funny, but as i paste it it seems to make very little sense...so the whole version is here linked to Poly site:
KG: Im asking is this the work?
AR:
Yes.
SP: To revisit
what Kate was saying, this type of work is not represented well in terms of the
existing art establishment.
KG: Pardon
AR: What
about quality?
KG: Fashion.
KG: Yeah it might be an increased understanding that the
majority of galleries in the world don’t commission relational work – yeah, we
know that already, and there’s lots of artists working out in the world and
I’ll carry on working out in the world, and some people will support me and
some people won’t

Kate: No.
Perhaps you get the gist but perhaps not and so to borrow from another group of people othered here is a visual that might be useful, to reinforce our point.
